Mass Matters: No Evidence for Ubiquitous Lithium Production in Low-mass Clump Giants

چکیده
Abstract Known sources of lithium (Li) in the universe include Big Bang, novae, asymptotic giant branch stars, and cosmic-ray spallation. During their longer-lived evolutionary phases, stars are not expected to add Li budget Galaxy, but largely deplete it. In this context, recent analyses data from GALAH LAMOST for field red clump (RC) have concluded that there is need a new production channel Li, ubiquitous among low-mass would be triggered on upper (RGB) or at helium ignition. This distinct Li-rich problem reflects bulk RC star properties. We provide an analysis accounts distribution progenitor masses observed today. Such progenitors different than today’s RGB stars. Using standard post-main-sequence stellar evolution, we show giants as by consistent with model predictions, does require mechanisms. Our predicts large fraction very low abundances progenitors, higher mass ones. Moreover, should number limits giants, correspond masses. The most indeed confirm presence numbers limits, much lower mean abundance concordance our interpretation.

Thermohaline mixing in low-mass giants
Thermohaline mixing has recently been proposed to occur in low mass red giants, with large consequences for the chemical yields of low mass stars. We investigate the role of thermohaline mixing during the evolution of stars between 1M⊙ and 3M⊙, in comparison to other mixing processes acting in these stars. We confirm that thermohaline mixing has the potential to destroy most of the He which is ...
متن کاملMass-loss from Red Giants
Although much is known about the nature of winds from hot stars and giants and supergiants with spectral types earlier than K, there is still much to be learned regarding the mass-loss process in cool, late-type stars. We will review the current state of research, with particular reference to observations and modelling of mass-loss from giant stars in symbiotic systems.
متن کاملLithium production by thermohaline mixing in low-mass, low-metallicity asymptotic giant branch stars
We examine the effects of thermohaline mixing on the composition of the envelopes of low-metallicity asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. We have evolved models of 1, 1.5 and 2M and of metallicity Z = 10 −4 from the pre-main sequence to the end of the thermal pulsing asymptotic giant branch with thermohaline mixing applied throughout the simulations. We find that the small amount of He that rem...
متن کاملWhy Do Low-Mass Stars Become Red Giants?
We revisit the problem of why stars become red giants. We modify the physics of a standard stellar evolution code in order to determine what does and what does not contribute to a star becoming a red giant. In particular, we have run tests to try to separate the effects of changes in the mean molecular weight and in the energy generation. The implications for why stars become red giants are dis...
متن کاملClumpy shocks and the clump mass function
One possible mechanism for the formation of molecular clouds is large scale colliding flows. In this paper, we examine whether clumpy, colliding, flows could be responsible for the clump mass functions that have been observed in several regions of embedded star formation, which have been shown to be described by a Salpeter type slope. The flows presented here, which comprise a population of ini...
